| okay well i just got back from new orleans on a mission trip/choir tour. the choir concerts were all fun, but i think i got the most out of the mission work. my group worked in the lower 9th ward just a few blocks away from wh ere the levee broke, so it was disastrous. we had to have a few more people in our group cuz our house was trashed when we got there, with at least a foot of water damaged ceiling, books, papers, rusted jewelry, pictures, etc etc littering the floor, and on top of all that fridges and beds and couches and chairs and cabinets, so we needed a lot of people to do all that work before getting to what the other groups were doing in their houses. the story of our homeowner will now be stolen from allisons xanga.
"i worked on this house that belongs to an 88 year old man named Willy Thomas. he hadn't evacuated when told in order to help a friend he had had for 25 years. He had lived in that house for most of his life and ridin out a hurricane before so he thought he could just do it again, what could 2 or 3 feet of water do right? when the levee broke and the water wouldn't stop rising Willy took out an axe and some how managed to pull down his attic stairs and hack his way though the roof. The water spilled over his gutters at 22 feet. There he waited with a now broken arm for 6 hours until someone with a boat picked him up. he ended up waiting 3 days in the superdome for medical help."
it was touching to work on someones house with so much dedication to his house and friends and family. you could also tell he was all about the security of his family because we found 2 rifles, 4 single shot guns, and a pistol, all loaded.
it was an indescribable trip, and nobody will really know the devastation and effort being put forth down in new orleans without going there. pictures and words just dont come close to describing it. |
